“Aysanabee has a gift for excavating memories in his songs, and “Somebody Else” is a beautiful example.”
“Letting Go’ is a soulful meditation that goes beyond a breakup song; it’s an anthem for accepting with grace the hard things we cannot change. ‘Can’t ask a tree not to grow/ Can’t tell the summer not to go.’ And that voice — a healer in and of itself.”
New EP “Here and Now” now available
“Here and Now”, Aysanabee’s follow up to his critically-acclaimed debut album “Watin”, explores Indigenous love and loss in the modern era. A departure from his first record, which combined music and journalism to tell the story of his late grandfather, the EP offers a glimpse into another side of the artist. In Aysanabee’s own words, “This is the first of more records that will explore the impact of colonization on Indigenous love in this country. This country never made me feel worthy of love, and in turn never made me feel worthy of the love of another. Through this record, I wanted to be honest by facing my own fallibilities when it comes to building and keeping relationships. In upcoming projects I hope to dig deeper into this concept as a whole.”
Aysanabee
Aysanabee (Ace-in-abbey) is a two-time JUNO award-winning alternative indie artist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter. He is Oji-Cree, Sucker Clan of Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario, Canada. He now calls Toronto home and began creating music under his mother’s maiden name when moments of stillness allowed him to slow down and create music that, he says, more accurately represents himself as an artist. With a swirling mix of indie, soul, and electronic sounds, and pulse-quickening fingerpicking, the music is both hypnotic and melodious.
On March 23, 2024, Aysanabee made history as the first Indigenous artist to win the JUNO Awards for Alternative Album of the Year and the coveted Songwriter of the Year, for his EP Here and Now.
His music has garnered an extensive list of accolades and support. In March 2023, he became the first Indigenous artist to hit Number 1 on Mediabase Canada's Alternative Rock chart. He has been short-listed for the 2023 Polaris Prize and performed close to 300 shows on major stages, festivals, and venues across Canada and globally.
